 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres] -- April 16, 1971 - - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Called"the "Queen of Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music have made her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers from the second half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of "Greatest Latino Artists" Based on Latin albums and Latin songs charts. The media dubbed her the "Tejano Madonna" due to her attire choices. In the 1980s, she was often accused of being a snob and was denied bookings at various venues in Texas for her performance of Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre.
